Biography

Ellis ap William ap Hugh (aka Ellis Williams, Sr.) was born about 1596 at Cae Fadog, Merionethshire, North Wales. Of royal Welsh lineage, Ellis' father was William ap Hugh ap Thomas (aka William Pugh) and his mother was Margaret ferch John Wynn ap Owain (Margaret Owen). He traced his paternal lineage back to Madog ap Maredudd, the last king of Powys (mid-Wales), ca. 1100.

In 1615 in Dolgelly (Dolgellau), Merionethshire, he married Margaret John (Marrett ferch John in Welsh) who was born in 1596 in Merionethshire. She was the daughter of John Powell and Sybil Gwynn, both also descended from medieval Welsh royalty, tracing their heritage back to Collwyn ap Tangno, Lord of Eifionydd Ardudwy, (Carnarvonshire) , b. 1025.

Ellis and Margaret had at least 3 children:[1]

  1. Ellis Williams, Jr. (Ellis ap Hugh Williams) b. 1621 in Cae Fadog, Llanfor Parish, Merionethshire, Wales (m. 1646 Ellin UNK. in Wales) d. 1691 in Pennsylvania. Son: Robert Williams b. 1647, d. 1734 in Pennsylvania. This family became Quakers in Wales & emigrated to Pennsylvania with William Penn, settling in the "Welsh Tract" in Penna. in 1686.
  1. Gwen verch Ellis Williams, b. 1629 in Cae Fadog, Merionethshire, Wales; d. Dec 1688, in Wales. She m. 1652 Hugh ap Cadwalader ap Rhys, b. 1627, in Ysbyty Ifan, Denbighshire; d. 1665 in Wales. Their children all converted to the Quaker faith and emigrated to Penn's Quaker-friendly colony of Pennsylvania.
  1. Robert Ap Hugh ap William b: 1630 in Cae Fadog, Merionethshire, Wales (m. 1649 to Elizabeth Verch William Owen) d. ca. 1700 in Pennsylvania. They also converted to the Quaker faith and emigrated to Pennsylvania.

Both Ellis Williams, Sr. and his wife Margaret John died in Caernarvon, Caernarvonshire, North Wales, home of her family, in 1645. His death was on February 26, 1645 and hers on April 5, 1645.

Williams-14593 and Williams-14592 do not represent the same person because: No way can these both represent the same person. Entirely different parental lines, actuarial dates, locations, etc.

Williams-98212 and Williams-14592 appear to represent the same person because: some errors have been made in relationships on Williams-98212, but these are intended to be the same person based on the source being used.

Williams-19353 and Williams-14592 appear to represent the same person because: the only conflicting data is the year of birth. I can't say which birth date is accurate but as long as the other date is added to the notes we can then look into the correct birth. In addition, there is no other conflicting data, and the relationships that appear on both records match. Also seems like Williams-14592 should prevail since that is the earlier record. Please merge. Thank you!
