William Henry Williams was born in 1840 in Ratcliff (Limehouse) London, and christened on the 12th January 1841 in the parish of Saint Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, London; his parents recorded as John Jury Williams and Eliza. [1]

In 1861 he went sheep farming on the Moeraki run in North Otago, at first with F. D. Rich (whose father, George Rich had a Merino stud in Mt. Eden, Auckland) and later on his own account [4][5]
In 1867, after returning to Auckland, he Joined in the the Thames gold rush, trying his luck for three years in several different claims. [6] It was at this time that their little daughter Helen Maria died [7]

Old residents, to the number of forty, banquetted Mr W. H Williams (former manager of the coal mines) in Swift's Star Hotel last night. Mr Williams had arrived unexpectedly the same morning, and the haste and anxiety shown to do him honour go far to express the general feeling towards an old manager who has been absent six years, and pays a flying visit of 24 hours.
He married Jessie Forbes in Palmerston, Otago on the 16th September 1885. [16]
About 1890 he went farming, recorded as "Farmer" on the wedding certificate for Jane Herriot Walker and Frederick Arthur Williams. [17]
