Biography

John Williams was born before 1631 In England (based on his appearing as an adult in records in 1652).[1] He emigrated with his family, arriving in Massachusetts by the age of ten.

John was the son of John Williams[2] and his wife, Jane.

John was the brother of:

  1. Mary Williams,[2] died 6 October 1714 at Haverhill,[3] married Daniel Bradley on 21 May 1662, at Haverhill, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[4] Haverhill was part of Norfolk county from 1643 until 1680 when it became part of Essex County.[5]
  2. Sarah Williams,[2] who married John Eyers on 5 May 1646, at Haverhill,[4] and they had:
    1. Sarah Eyres, mentioned in the will of her grandfather, John Williams, which was made 9 December 1670;[2]
  3. Lidia Williams,[2] born on 16 March, 1642-3, at Haverhill, Norfolk County;[6]
  4. Joseph Williams,[2] born on 18 April, 1647, at Haverhill;[6]

Marriages and Children

On 9 September, 1661, at Haverhill, John married Rebecca Collby[4] aka Colbie.[7]

John and Rebecca were the parents of:

  1. Sarah Williams, born on 27 June, 1662, at Haverhill, Norfolk County,[8] married on 26 November 1679 at Haverhill, Joseph Bond, the son of John Bond and his wife, Hester Blakeley, Sarah's step-mother;[9]
  2. Mary, born on 24 November 1663 at Haverhill,[8] [10] married 1) Thomas Silver of Haverhill on 28 December 1681 at Haverhill,[11] 2) Simon Wainwright[12] on 7 August 1700, at Haverhill,[12] [11] 3) Sergeant John Boynton, son of John Boynton and his wife, Ellinor Pell,[13] [14] at Bradford on 19 February 1719, [15] [14] [16] and 4) Joshua Boynton, son of William and his wife, Elizabeth Jackson,[13] [17] called Joshua Boynton of Rowley, on 30 October 1727 at Haverhill,[18] Joshua was the cousin of her previous husband, John Boynton.[16]
  3. a daughter, born May, 1666, at Haverhill,[19] Rebecca Williams married Samuel Marble [Marvin] on 14 October 1686 at Haverhill.[20]
  4. a daughter, born 1 August, 1668, at Haverhill,[7] died there the same month;[21]
  5. Mercy Williams, born 4 December, 1669;[22]
  6. Susanna Williams, born 11 April 1672;[7]

Rebecca Williams, the wife of John, jr, died on 10 June 1672 at Haverhill, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.[21]

John married Hester Blakeley, the widow of John Bond, on 5 May 1675 at Haverhill.[9]

Real Estate

On 8 April 1659, "five acres" in the town of Haverhill, with the house and barn on it, was conveyed to John Williams, jr, of Haverhill, by Thomas Davis (Norfolk Registry of Deeds, book 1, leaf 153)[23] and his wife, Christian, for £40; the property bounded that of Mr Jewett and John's father John Williams sr, together with five commanages and 4 acres in world's-end meadow.[24]

On 21 March 1661, Robert Swan of Haverhill and his wife, Elizabeth, conveyed to John Williams, jr, of Haverhill 10 acre of 2nd division upland on the west side of fishing river and 1 acres in 1st division of meadow, formerly Bart Heath's on north side of Thomas Eyer's Hauke's meadow.[24]

John Williams conveyed "five acres" with its house and barn to Stephen Webster of Haverhill on 2 March 1665 (Norfolk Registry of Deeds, book 2, leaf 154).[23]

On 26 August 1667, John Williams, sr, and his wife, Jane, and John Williams, jr, and his wife, Rebecka, all from Haverhill, conveyed for £50 to John Clouff or Cluff, sr, of Salisbury, 180 acres of upland and meadow in Haverhill.[25]

Death

John Williams, the husband of Esther, died on 30 April 1698 at Haverhill.[21]

The birth of John Williams in Salisbury, MA in 1636 is highly unlikely. Salisbury was "settled by the English in 1638 as Colchester, and incorporated in 1640 as Salisbury" according to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salisbury,_Massachusetts

According to "History of Massachusetts Blog" https://historyofmassachusetts.org/salisbury-massachusetts-history/ "The first settlers arrived in Salisbury in the spring of 1639," three years after the purported birth of John Williams!
