Biography

Emma was born in 1878. She was the daughter of William Williams and Elizabeth Bray.

An article published on Saturday, November 21, 1891 in the Manawatu Herald brought into question the ability of her parents to be proper and caring parents, when they consented for their little daughter to be married at the age of 13 years and two months:

"It is lawful, but it is objectionable and the reasons urged in justification of the marriage, makes the fact of the utter want of supervision over the members of the family most startling, and justifies our previous statement that these parents have no right to the care of their children."

The marriage went ahead regardless and Emma married James John Patterson in 1891.

They went on to have at least nine children (one of whom died young).

In the 1900 NZ Electoral Rolls she was living at Palmerston North with her husband James, who was a Labourer.

In the 1928 NZ Electoral Rolls Emma was recorded living at Root Street, Makino with her at least two of her children, Evelyn and Percy. James was not in the household at the time.

Her husband died in 1949.

In the 1963 NZ Electoral Rolls Emma was living at 37 Millar Street, Palmerston North, a widow.

She passed away on 30 April 1965 at the age of 86.
