Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Nathaniel Williams was a Virginia colonist.

Nathaniel Williams, son of John Williams and Mary Keeling, was born on December 1, 1712, according to a family bible.[See attached pdf.][1] At the time his family was living on Queen’s Creek, York County, Virginia. While young, his family moved up the Pamunkey branch of the York River to or near New Market, which was on the Little River in the fork of the Pamunkey (the junction of the North and South Anna rivers) in St Martins Parish, Hanover County, at present Vernon west of Doswell.[2]

He married about 1738 Elizabeth, the mother of his children, per a family bible. [See attached bible record.] She is said to be Elizabeth Washington without any supporting evidence.

The St Martin Parish records are lost and most the Hanover County records, so we know little about him. From the one surviving county book, we learn that in March of 1733 he witnessed a deed from John Matlock Sr. to son Geo Matlock and a deed from John Matlock to dau. Mary, wife of Benj. Johnson[3] Following is George Matlock’s deed to John Matlock Jr. for 100a Tayler’s Creek and Charles Swamp.

From the vestry book of neighboring St. Paul's Parish we know that on October 15, 1737, he was paid 30£ by the parish, but for what service is not given.[4]

He died in 1763, for it is said that his youngest son Joseph, born in 1748, was 15 at the time of his father’s death [see his profile], thus Nathaniel died at around the age of 51, relatively young.

All the sons dispersed. John, Nathaniel Jr. and Robert joined their uncle Joseph Williams in Lunenburg County, Virginia, where possibly, under the tutelage of Paul Carrington, became lawyers. Youngest son, Joseph Williams, went to live with his uncle Daniel Williams, a planter/merchant in Granville (Vance) County, North Carolina.

Elizabeth was apparently still alive in 1767, for her son John, living in Charlotte/Lunenburg County, VA, brought his bride-to-be to Hanover County to marry.[5]

The sons were left to settle the estate. In 1768 son John was indebted to his brother Nathaniel for 38£ “his being my security in Gen. Court against Geo. Davidson against me in Prince Edward and in Court of Amelia against John Vaughan. The said Nathaniel's part of his father's estate which at this time cannot be appertained, I give…” Witn: Wm Morris, Hall (X) Williamson, Sarah (X) Williamson.[6] Son John lost the case in Prince Edward County against George Davidson in August 1767; Robert, Nathaniel and [cousin] Henry Williams were his witnesses, Joseph Moore for George Davidson. Case retried in 1768 March Court, first in favor of Davidson, then judgement set aside for Aug 1769.[7] In October 1767 son Nathaniel was sued by John Vaughn in Amelia Co. Crt, but the defendant did not appear.[8]

Research Notes

The FindAGrave profile offers different locations for both his birth and death, and a thorough discussion of his wife and children and grandchildren. Note, however, that her husband's Find A Grave: Memorial #163260145 conflates the history of his wife, Elizabeth Washington with another, especially regarding her origins.

A presumptive match is Nathaniel Williams found in 1755 in Granville County, North Carolina.[9] [The source is North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890!!]

Death Date: 15 Sep 1766, Charlotte County, Virginia[citation needed]

Nathaniel is sometimes seen as married to a Mary Lewis. The marriage date to Elizabeth Washington is uncertain and undocumented in terms of a source that supports the date. P

Nathaniel was born in 1712. He passed away in 1766.

Hello Madelon, thanks for the comment below. When I researched further I found this: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~katy/vawms/b15886.html

which shows his (correct?) death date. I corrected it in Williams-7224 so I think we can proceed with the merge. Perhaps that website can also help with the rest of the Williams folk! Don't have time right this minute, but will continue to research.

Williams-3255 and Williams-7224 appear to represent the same person because: Nathaniel Williams-3255 is an orphaned profile that says he's the son of John Williams and Mary Keeling. His birth and death dates are different than yours, but since his profile contains no other relatives, recommend merging and retaining your birth, death & marriage info.
