History of the Weidenhofer Families in Australia 1846 - 2004
Arthur George, the eldest of George and Louisa’s seven children was born in Petersburg, as Peterborough was then called, and was almost ten years old when the family moved to Renmark on the River Murray.
In 1910, at the age of twenty three, he married Catherine Christine Haynes at “Nelbuck Estate” in Renmark. His brother, Henry, was a witness at the wedding. Catherine was born in Wentworth, New South Wales, a town on the junction of the Murray and Darling Rivers. At the time of her marriage
Catherine was living in Renmark on the River Murray.
The next record we have is a 1910 newspaper report of the young couple’s attendance at the wedding of Anna Peperkorn, Arthur’s cousin.
The following year, in October, a son, George Walter was born and, presumably, named after his paternal grandfather.
Arthur had always been a keen rifle shooter and for eight years had belonged to the Renmark Rifle Club, so it is not surprising that he should join the 27th Battalion Rifles of the A.I.F. when he enlisted in August 1915.
Arthur and his brother Ern travelled together to Adelaide to join on the same day.
The enlistment papers describe his appearance as: - 6’ tall, 158 lbs., fresh complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair and “of very healthy appearance”. Arthur and Ern sailed to Egypt where both were transferred to the 10th Battalion before sailing on to France. Here the brothers were parted when Ern was again transferred.
After serving three months in France, Arthur was seriously wounded in the left forearm and was invalided back to England to spend several months in hospital. When he became convalescent, he was for a time employed sorting letters in Weymouth before being returned to Australia on the “Benella’ and
was finally discharged in June 1917 as medically unfit.
The discharge papers declared him ‘of good character’. Arthur returned to his wife and child in Renmark where he was able to continue his war effort as much needed man-power on the fruit blocks.
Very little of his movements can be traced after the war. He moved from
Remark and family members say the family lost touch with him altogether.
In 1942, when his father died, it is mentioned that he was living in Queensland.
