Biography

Excerpt from "History of Piatt County; together with a brief history of Illinois from the discovery of the upper Mississippi to the present time" Emma Piatt, 1883:

MK. EZRA CLINE (deceased) was a native of Ohio. His father moved from Ohio to a farm on Stringtown Lane about 1839. He had been married four times. The subject of our sketch had three brothers and four sisters, all of whom are dead now. John, Jacob and David died in this county. Jacob left two children, one of whom is still liv- ing on the home place. John left six children. Ezra Cline's half- brother Samuel lives in Warren county, Illinois ; Martin died in the Andersonville prison ; Simeon lives in Missouri ; Reuben is married and lives in Piatt county. Ezra Cline was married in 1854, to Mrs. Willis Ater nee ELIZA WILLIAMS, a native of Indiana. After her first husband's death she went home to live with her father, who died in one month after Mr. Ater's decease. Five of Mr. Cline's children are living. John T. is in the sheep business in Uvalde county, Texas ; Jacob C. was married in 1881, to Amanda Class, and lives on the Cline place ; Sarepta C. was married in July, 1879, to Cyrus Peck, and lives in Willow Branch township; Joseph D. and Mary M. still live at home. Mr. Cline died in 1877, and his widow still owns the home place.

Obituary excerpted from Find a Grave profile: <I>Mrs. Eliza Cline died Sunday morning, January 2, 1916 at her home in Decatur. A year ago she had an attack of pneumonia from which she never fully recovered. The body was brought to Monticello Tuesday afternoon on the Wabash and taken direct to the Christian Church where funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Interment was in Monticello Cemetery.

Eliza Williams was born near Perryville, Indiana August 10, 1830. She came with her parents to Illinois and settled in Willow Branch Twp. She was married to Willis Ater and after his death, she returned to her father's home. On September 7, 1854 she married Ezra Cline. Mr. Cline died in 1877. After his death she moved to Monticello where she resided until 1892 when she moved to Decatur.

To this latter union, five children were born, four of whom are living: John of California; Jacob C. of Monticello; Joseph of Decatur; and Mrs. Mary Shoff of Los Angeles CA. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Monroe Peck of WIllow Branch Twp; and one brother, Joseph WIlliams of Mt. Vernon IL; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cline possessed about 196 acres of land in this county.
