John Williams, Who Died In 1885, Left 398 Descendants
John williams, son of David (LOnesome Dave) Williams, was born on Sept. 10, 1802, and died Sept. 24, 1885. He was the progenitor of hundreds of persons now living in Raleigh County, and 398 direct descendants at the time of his death.
A newspaper story published after he died in 1885 had this to say about the pioneer settler: John Williams, whose demise we noted two weeks ago, departed this life the 24th ultimo and was born Sept. 10th, 1802. Mr. Williams was one of Raleigh's oldest and first settlers, having come to this county (then Montgomery County, Va.) about the year 1818, when he was only 16 years of age. This county was then an almost unbroken forest and the subject of these remarks, being of a hardy nature fond of the hardships that naturally attended the first settlers and fonder still of hunting the wild animals that then infested our forests, he lived a most enjoyable life. In 1820 he was wedded to Miss Susan Stover, who only a few years ago departed this life, and the two raised a large family, most of who are now living and all reside in this county, several of them being leading citizens.
This branch of the Williams family is the largest in the county and with few exceptions all of the descendants of Mr. and Mrs. John Williams reside in out midst. There were seventeen children born to Mr. Williams, thirteen of whom are now living and attended this funeral. The thirteen living children are all married and their offspring are as follows:
Eliza Stover has 8 children, 5 living and 3 dead; 50 grandchildren, 43 living and 7 dead; 20 great-grandchildren, 27 living and 2 dead.
Alethia Smith has 8 children, 7 living and one dead; 24 grandchildren, 27 living adn 2 dead.
