Biography
Gertrude Willliams was born in 1877 in Pennsylvania. (Her full name was shown in a daughter's marriage certificate as Gertrude Mary Nichols Snyder.)
She was shown in the 1880 census, Sandy Creek, Pennsylvania, living with her parents. But her exact birthdate is uncertain: first marriage certificate, in Pennsylvania, 1897, says she was born on 2 August 1877; but second marriage certificate, in Ohio, 1904, says she was born on 12 August 1877!
A record shows the marriage of "Gertie M. Williams" to G.W. Roberts, on 8 Feb 1897 at Wind Gap, in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. (Did the husband have a name? or just initials?) The marriage record shows that she was a servant and was born at Ackermanville, Pennsylvania. So, is this the same person who was born at Sandy Creek? Uncertain.
Another marriage record shows the marriage of Gertrude M. Williams to Frank Snyder, on 16 Nov 1904 in Wakeman, Huron County, Ohio. It confirms that she was born in Pennsylvania, 1877, but it says she was NOT previously married! If that was correct, then the marriage of G.W. Roberts was apparently someone else.
1940 census showed Gertrude M. Williams, a widow, age 63, so born about 1877, lived at Scranton, Pennsylvania, with two lodgers. Is this the same person? Then why is her surname shown as Williams, instead of either Roberts or Snyder?
Something is fishy... unless there was more than one"Gertrude M. Williams", born 1877, living in Pennsylvania? Very confusing. Who can clear up the confusion?
The Gertrude who married Frank Snyder died on 15 June 1966 at Canton, Ohio.
I haven't been able to find any further records of the Gertrude who married G.W. Roberts.
Were these two Gertrudes really the same person? Speculation... facts are missing. Poor record-keeping produced real confusion.
