Josie Lenora (Williams) Wakeman (1905 - 1980)

My grandmother crochet and knit in her spare time. She was very good at crocheting and whenever she entered her work into the San Joaquin county fair she always came away with a prize, usually first. Her family, husband and child moved to Stockton California during the dust bowl. During WWII she worked at the Stockton Sharps Depot. There were peach trees in the back yard & when they ripened she and aunt Beulah would can peaches and make jam for the year. Whenever we came to visit there were always cookies in the cookie jar, fried chicken, chicken milk gravy, mashed potatoes, and a veggie for dinner. I learned to make gravy from watching her cook. In the evenings she would sit in her rocker with her knitting or crocheting in her lap and watch TV. Her favorite show was The Lawrence Welk show. She died at age 72 from late diagnosed and untreated diabetes.
