Biography

Melvina (aka Alvina, Milrina) Elizabeth Williams was born 1882 in Illinois.[1],[2] Her parents may both have been born in Illinois.[1]

Melvina married William H. Hale (b. Mar 1869 in Tennessee, both parents b. TN) in about 1898.[1] She was only about 17 and he was about 29 when they wed. Melvina and William had a son, Samuel L. Hale (b. abt 1909 in Oklahoma).[3]

By 1910, Melvina was listed as widowed and single mother to Samuel L. Hale, and as residing in Montgomery County, Kansas, in the home of her brother-in-law S B Hale (b. abt 1872 in Tennessee), who was married to Hettie (b. abt 1873 in Kentucky, children: John (b. abt 1893 in Missouri), Ida (b. abt 1898 in Missouri), Melvin (b. abt 1900 in Illinois), Myrtle (b. abt 1907 in Missouri), Dixey (b. abt 1909 in Oklahoma)).[3] This S B Hale is Samuel B Hale (Haile), who was enumerated in Kentucky in the 1900 census with wife Hattie and children John F. and Ida.[4]

By 1915, Melvina and her brother-in-law, Samuel Barton Hale appear to have set up housekeeping together[5],[6],[7],[8] Melvina and Samuel had additional children Nellie C. Hale (b. abt 1916 in Kansas), Paul E. (b. abt 1919 in Kansas), Horace M. (b. abt 1920 in Kansas), and Emma D. (b. abt 1922 in Colorado).[8],[6],[7],[9]

In 1920, the family was residing in the household of Arthur G. Yeaton in Kansas.[8]

By 1930, Melvina was widowed and living with children Nellie, Paul, Horace, and Emma in Grand Junction, Colorado, at a home along the Colorado River on 830 West Main Street.[9] By 1940, Melvina remained unmarried and was living in Idaho as head of household with her adult married daughter, Emma (Hale) Martin, son Horace, and daughter-in-law Myrtle.[2] Her oldest son, Samuel L. Hale, resided nearby with his wife Gladys R. (Isgar) Hale (b. abt 1913 in Colorado) and Melvina's grandchildren Hazel R. (b. abt 1932 in Idaho), Melvina L. (b. abt 1934 in Idaho), and Nellie M. (b. abt 1936 in Idaho).[10]
