Biography

Her birthdate is in the bible of her brother, Minor Barbee Redd Williams - also on her tombstone.

(NOTE: this is a very long obit and this is an abstract I made from my photo-copy:

Arkansas Gazette, issue of 2 Oct 1874, Little Rock, Pulaksi Co, Arkansas.

Obituary of Mrs. Matilda (Williams) Johnson

She was born in Scott Co., Ky in Oct 1793 - daughter of Charles P. & Elizabeth Williams, who had in the year 178 migrated from Winchester, Va & made their home in Scott Co.

When about 18 years of age, on 8 Sept 1811 she intermarried with Benjamin Johnson, of Scott Co - a brother of the late Richard M. Johnson, Vice President of this United States under President Van Buren. Her husband became a District Judge of Ky. He was sent by President Monroe in 1819 to the territory of Arkansas, as one of the judges of the Superior Court of the territory - in 1821 she moved her family to Arkansas and from that time she has made her home on our soil.

In 1836 her husband was made a Judge of the US District Court. Mrs. Johnson was the mother of 8 children: Juliet B. wife of Ambrose H. Seiver, Robert W., George J. , Benjamin S., Richard H., James B., Charles P.,& Irene M (wife of late Dr. John A. Jordan & now wife of Dr. Charles M. Taylor) - only Robert, Richard and Irene now survive. The Johnsons owned a farm near Chicot and one called the Yonocopin Place in Desha.

"One of her brothers, Barnett Williams, will be remembered by the older class of citizens of Little Rock, as he was the postmaster in this city for many years and many a tear will start the eyes growing dry with age at the recollection of honest old "Uncle Barnett" He was first appointed by President Van Buren, but such were his well known admirable qualities of heart and undoubted fitness that upon the accession of President Harrison the Whigs of Little Rock though "Uncle Barnett" was a Democrat insisted that he continue which he did through administrations of Harrison & Tyler"

Year following her marriage, hubby (7th born of twelve), along with five of eight brothers went off to the War of 1812, returning home afterwards, brother Richard Mentor was a one term vice=president under first American born president, Martin Van Buren and Benjamin to Arkansas when appointed one of three Superior Court Judges for Arkansas Territory in 1821 by our fifth president James Monroe, then again under John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, later serving as United States District Judge for Arkansas from statehood in 1836 until his death in 1849. He was namesake of Johnson County, Arkansas. History has him a part of "The Family"who pretty much controlled Arkansas up to the Civil War, thus reaping many of the financial benefits.
