Biography

Gracie (Williams) York was a Tennessean.

Grace Loretta Williams, daughter of Francis Williams and Alice Pile, was born in Pall Mall, Tennessee in 1900. She was listed as "Minnie Mae" when she was counted on the census with her parents and family in Fentress County, Tennessee in 1900,[1] and "Gracie" in 1910.[2]

She married Alvin C. York in 1919, after he returned a hero from his World War I military service.[3]

In 1920 the couple was counted on the census in Fentress, Tennessee before the birth of their first child.[8] They had three surviving children by 1930, and were still living in Fentress County.[9] And by 1940 there were six children at home with them, as well as other family members.[10]

Her husband died in 1964;[11] she died on 27 September 1984 in a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee,[12][13] and was buried at Wolf River Cemetery in Pall Mall, Tennessee.[14]
