Biography

Note: What is the evidence that Sherrod Williams was a son of James Williams and Keziah Brooks?

Sherrod Williams is buried in the Williams Cemetery in Franklin County in south central Tennessee, southeast of the town of Winchester.[1] In 1958, a military stone was added to his gravesite. The application for the stone states that he served in the miltary from 24 September 1813 until 29 December 1813. [2] His birth and death dates are taken from the military marker, which reads:

Sherrod Williams Sr.
Tennessee
Cpl [Corporal] 2 West Tenn Vols
War of 1812
April 20 1776 - Sept. 12, 1831

A nearby gravestone reads "Poly, wife of Sherod Williams. Born Feb. 14, 1781. Died June 18, 1854," and includes a verse "by her sons Mike & J. C. Williams." [3] Another stone in the same graveyard reads "Lent, son of Sherod & Polly Williams, born Oct. 17, 1817. Died Apr. 8, 1900." [4]

Sherrod's wife, Polly, may have been Mary Ann "Polly" Looney. There is a "Looney Hollow" not far from both "Williams Cove" and the Williams Cemetery. Their marriage may have taken place on 14 November 1801 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and they are reputed to have had 18 children. The following list needs to be verified: [5]

  1. Jefferson Williams, born 2 January 1802; died 3 March 1817.
  2. Rachael Williams, born 2 March 1803; died 6 April 1851; married William Matthews.
  3. Jennie Williams, born 22 January 1805; died 16 November 1883; married Jeremia Matthews.
  4. Margaret Williams, born 2 May 1806; married Henry Garner.
  5. James Williams, born 28 May 1807, Duck River, Maury County, Tennessee; died 27 February 1877; married Catherine Tally.
  6. Louisa Williams, born 22 March 1809; married John Cohenhaver.
  7. Michael Williams, born 1 September 1810; married Eliza Jones.
  8. Madison Williams, born 15 November 1811; died 13 August 1867; married Betsy Holland. [6]

  16. William Hermsprong Williams, born 22 February 1823; married (1) Lucy Caperton, (2) Pauline Brown.
  17. Francis Marion Williams, born 29 March 1825; married Cordelia Truman (or Thurman). The 1850 census shows Sherrod's widow, Mary, living with Francis and Cordellia in Franklin County.
  18. George Washington Williams, born 29 March 1825; died 8 August 1842.

A December 1815 land survey in Franklin County, Tennessee, mentions that Sherrod Williams was living adjacent to the parcel being surveyed, which was "on the head of Norwoods creek, a branch of the Boiling fork of Elk river." [7]

In May 1830, "Sherwood Williams" was granted three adjacent parcels of land in Franklin County totaling 710 acres "in a little Cove half a mile south of Davy's [?] Mill on Cumberland Mountain." He "entered" the lands in 1826 and 1827. (The price was one cent per acre!) [8]

In 1829, Sherrod Williams was sued in Franklin County, Tennessee, by Samuel Norwood for trespass and damages. [9]

The Will of Sherrod Williams

"The nuncupative [i.e. oral] will of Sherod Williams dec'd late of Franklin County Tennessee made and executed in his last illness on the 12th day of September AD 1831, said deceased said he in the first place he wanted the debts due him collected and all his just debts paid out of debts due him, he stated that it was his will & wish that his wife should have all of his real and personal estate to wit, the land & negros & stock of every description during her natural life or widowhood but if she should marry then she is only to have her lawful part of the estate & it was his particular request that no part of his property should be sold." [10]

The will was proved in Madison County, Alabama, on 21 November 1831. James Williams and Michael Williams were granted letters of administration, and they posted bond, together with Polly Williams.

Further Research

In her book on genetic genealogy, Emily D. Aulicino describes connections between Sherrod Williams and a Phillip E. Williams, born about 1792. "Both Philip and Sherrod enlisted and served at the same time in the War of 1812 and the Seminole War. They also each named sons Hardin and Jefferson. Philip had several dealings with the known sons of Sherrod, and in 1838 Lent Williams (son of Sherrod) attested to witnessing the marriage of William Jefferson Williams (a son of Phillip) [to] Elizabeth Stubblefield." (She also states, without giving a source, that when Sherrod died in Madison County, Alabama, in 1831, he was on his way home from visiting in Mississippi.) Aulicino claims that DNA evidence shows there was a close relationship between Sherrod and Phillip, but not exactly what it was. It's possible that Phillip was Sherrod's son, brother, nephew or cousin. "With the difference in age, one would think Sherrod could be Phillips father, but Phillip was not listed in the Bible records or Sherrod's will, so the hunt continues."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sherrod by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sherrod:
