Martha Williams was born in 1863 in the hill country of Winston County, Alabama. Later she moved with her family to Saline County, Arkansas. There she married Jacob Leroy Cobb Garrett in 1882.

According to this census, Martha had 7 children, but only 4 were living. Nancy Viola (Ward) Garrett, wife of William Henry, stated 'Henry' had a twin sister named Elvira. There was also a child named James. The gender and name for the 7th child is unknown, but either that child or James fell out of bed and two hours later he was deceased.

Martha passed away in 1928. Jacob and Martha are buried at Stainer Cemetery in Saline County.

She was respected and loved by her daughter-in-law, Viola (Ward) Garrett. Viola said Martha taught her how to cook and to do other domestic chores, things Viola's mother, who was a widow with many hungry children to feed, never had the time to do.
