The 1900 Federal Census Record for Charles Willis of Ashford clearly belongs to the family of Bertha Willis naming Charles and Ella as her parents and Lena and Emma as siblings.[1]
Charles, born May 1845, age 55, Married 14 yrs, born in Tolland, father b. in Vernon, mother b. in Willington, no profession listed;
Ella, wife, born July 1869, age 30, Married 14 yrs, has 3 children all living, born in Chaplin, father born in Chaplin, mother born in RI;
Lena/Lana born June 1886, age 13, born in Willington;
Bertha, born Sept 1890, age 9, born in Willington;
Emma, born Apr 1896, age 4, born in Ashford, CT.
Before 1900, census data indicates there are two Charles Willises, of about the same age, living in the Tolland area. There is Charles A., born about 1845, son of Jesse and brother of Abby; and Charles M, associated with Madison Willis (1850 and 1860). Charles A. cannot be found in the 1900 census and after 1900 (1910, 1920) only Charles A. can be found. Charles A. has been eliminated since he remained single and never had children.
