Biography
Joseph Willis was born in the Village of Bremhill, Wiltshire, England.
Joseph was born around April 1801, and baptized on the 3 May 1801 at the Parish Church of St Martin, in the Village of Bremhill, 1.6 miles (2.6 km) northwest of the Town of Calne and 4 miles (6.4 km) east of the Town of Chippenham, Parish of Bremhil, in Wiltshire, England[1][2]. He was the son of William Willis and Ann Brown, who married on the 26 August 1797 at the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, High Street, in the Market Town of Marlborough, on the River Kennet, 24 miles (39 km) north of the Cathedral City of Salisbury, in Wiltshire, England. William was from the Parish of Newbury[3].
Joseph married Charlotte Merrett on the 23 April 1831, after the publishing of Banns, at the Parish Church of St Martin, in the Village of Bremhill, Wiltshire, England. Both were from the Parish and with the consent of parents, were married by W. L. (Bowles) in front of witnesses William (Willis) and William (Powney)[4][5]. During their marriage, the following children were born to them:--
John Willis, born Ca. January 1833; bap. 27 January 1833 at St. Martin, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[6];
Thomas Willis, born Ca. March 1835; bap. 22 March 1835 at St. Martin, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[7];
Ann (Willis) Hitchcock, born Ca. April 1842; bap. 24 April 1842 at St. Martin, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[8][9];
Robert Willis, born between January and March 1851 in Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[10];
Sarah Willis, born between April and June 1847; bap. 3 October 1847; died 12 March 1848 at St. Martin, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[11][12]; and
Jane Willis, born between July and September 1851; bap. 5 October 1851 at St. Martin, Bremhill, Calne, Wiltshire[13][14].
In 1841, Joseph (40) lived with wife Charlotte (29); their children John (8), Thomas (6) and William (4), along with parents Agricultural Labourer, William (Willis) (80) and Ann (Brown) (70). They resided at Stockham Marsh Farm, east of the Village of Foxham, District of Calne, in Wiltshire, England[15]. It appeared that the Willis Family had settled at Stockham Marsh farm in 1851. Joseph (49) lived there with wife Charlotte (39); sons and Agricultural Labourers, John (18), Thomas (16) and William (14) and Scholars and children, Ann (9) and Robert (6). His widowed mother Ann (80) also resided with them and she received parish relief[16].
By 1861, most of the children had moved away and Joseph (59) and Charlotte (48) resided with Agricultural Labourer and son, Robert (16) and daughter, Jane (9) in a Cottage at Stockham Marsh Farm, where Joseph worked as an Agricultural Labourer[17]. However, around the 16 February 1871, at the age of 70, at Stockham Marsh Farm, near the Village of Bremhill, Parish of Bremhill, Wiltshire, Joseph passed away[18]. His burial took place, on the 18 February 1871 at the Parish Churchyard of St. Martin, Village of Bremhill, Parish of Bremhill, in Wiltshire, England[19][20].
