Early papers show his given name as "Gustav" while his death record shows it as "Gustavus".
Gustav Hermann Willis petitioned the Maine Supreme Court at Portland, Maine on 22 Mar 1871 "represents that he was born at Bremen Germany in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-three, that he came from Bremen to New York arriving in May 1861 and in the year 1865 came to Portland, Maine." His witness was Samuel N Merrill, Portland, Maine.
Gustavus Herman Willis married Emma Elizabeth Larrabee at Portland, Maine on 6 Jul 1874. They were the parents of one known daughter:
The 1900 US census for West Bridgewater, Massachusetts lists residents Gustavus H Willis (56), born in Germany, and his wife Emma E Willis (53), born in Maine. They own their home, which is mortgaged, located on East Street. He is employed as a "printing pressman". They have been married for twenty-six years and Emma has given birth to one child, alive at the tome of the census. He has been in the United States for 26 years and is naturalized.
He died in 1913 and is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Portland, Maine.
