Wendell M. Willis

WILLIS, Wendell M – Age 77, died at home on September 2, 1997 from complications of diabetes and renal failure. He was born July 21, 1920 at Cherry Grove, Oregon and lived in Oregon most of his life. He was inducted into the Army in 1943 and served with the 41st Infantry Division (Oregon Sunset Division) in the Pacific Theater. He fought in the invasion of the Philippines with General MacArthur and then served in Occupied Japan until his discharge in March 1946. After the War he operated a logging business from 1946 until 1962 in Oregon then spent several years operating logging equipment in Alaska where he met his wife Rose. They operated the Temple Hotel and Westward Ho Bar and Grill in Pendleton, Oregon for several years before moving to San Diego. They purchased a bar in Spring Valley which Rose managed while he worked as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1982. He leaves his wife, Rose; a son, Roger Willis of Florence, Oregon; a daughter, Donna Mitchell of Roseburg, Oregon; sisters, Doris Parmele of Condon, Oregon, Annette Connerton of Seattle, Washington, Faye Prong of Woodland, Washington and a brother, Calvin Willis of Helmet, California. He also leaves five grandchildren, Shawn, Shane, Sasha, Eric and Chad. There will be a Memorial Service at the Veterans Cemetery on Harvard Avenue at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 1997.
