Biography

Elizabeth Jane Willis & her husband are listed in her father's DAR record.

In 1783, in Botetourt County, Virginia, Elizabeth married James Carnachan Dunlap. In 1785, after the birth of two sons, Elizabeth and James migrated to Clark County, Kentucky (then known as Fayette County, KY) via the "Wilderness Road" and settled in the Bush Settlement, just north of Boonesboro, Kentucky, on the Lower Howard's Creek.

The Wilderness Road was the principal route used by settlers for more than fifty years to reach Kentucky from the East. The Wilderness Road was steep, rough, narrow, and it could only be traversed on foot or horseback. Despite the adverse conditions, thousands of people used it. [1]

In 1799, the family crossed the Cumberland Mountains into Kentucky and settled in Montgomery County, Kentucky, near Mt. Sterling. When crossing the mountains, from family stories, we are told her spouse placed two small children in baskets and placed them across the horses back and brought them across that way. According to our information the two children would have been John Dunlap, born about 1793 and Sarah (Sallie) Dunlap, born 1796. It is there near Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, that all the children grew to maturity.

Elizabeth and James were the parents of eight children:

  1. James Carnachan Dunlap, Jr 1783–1845
  2. William Harold Dunlap, born February 19, 1785, in Virginia, died June 14, 1871, in Buchanan County, Missouri
  3. Alexander Dunlap, born May 10, 1787, in Clark County, Kentucky, died May 11, 1872, in De Kalb County, Missouri
  4. Elizabeth Dunlap, born January 26, 1789, in Clark County, Kentucky, died February 2, 1869, in De Kalb, Buchanan County, Missouri, married James Ellison
  5. Andrew Washington Dunlap, born January 20, 1791, in Clark County, Kentucky, died December 24, 1847, in Adams County, Illinois, married Rachel Malone
  6. John Dunlap, born July 31, 1795, in Winchester, Clark County, Kentucky, died January 1, 1867, in Keysville, Crawford County, Kentucky, married Mariah Key
  7. Sarah "Sallie" Dunlap Wills 1796–
  8. Thomas Dunlap 1799–1867
