Biography

Bridget was probably born at Middleton Hall in Warwickshire. Her parents were married in 1581/1582 and she was probably one of the elder children of the marriage.

She married firstly in 1606 to Nicholas Strelley of Strelley, by a contract dated 4 June 1606:

Marriage settlement: Sir Philip Strelley and Nicholas Strelley; and Sir Percival Willoughby and Sir George Parkyns (marriage between Nicholas Strelley and Bridgett Willoughby); Location: Shipley etc. Derbyshire[1]

Nicholas died before 21 Jan 1608/9, when adminstration of his estate was granted.[2]

Her second husband was Henry Cavendish of Doveridge (an illegitimate grandson of Bess of Hardwick and nephew of the first Cavendish Earl of Devonshire). They married on 20 November 1610 at Doveridge, Derbyshire, England and had children.[2]

Bridget died on 30 June 1624 at Doveridge.[2]

Research notes

There may be a record of their marriage in the parish register of St Martin in the Fields, London, for September 1606:[3]

8. Phillipus Sterley duxit Bridgett Willowby
3. Nicholas Strelley duxit Bridgett Willowby

The second line is listed later in the month, out of date order, and is lightly struck through.

I have added a source for the marriage settlement of Nicholas and Bridget. The 1606 parish register for St Martin in the Fields, Westminster - one is for Phillipus Sterley and another (partly struck out) for Nicholas Strelley. Either these refer to totally different people, or an error has been made (Phillip was a party to the marriage contract).

The Bridget Willoughby who married Francis Strelley was the half-aunt of the Bridget Willoughby who married Nicholas Strelley: see note 449 to Cassandra Willoughby's account of the family at https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/royal-historical-society-camden-fifth-series/article/abs/account-of-an-elizabethan-family-the-willoughbys-of-wollaton-by-cassandra-willoughby-16701735/07961079C1AD7DBD3FD1A84F37B36095

Could well be a transcription mistake. Unfortunately no original to view.

I've added a viewable link. It is hard to tell whether the scanned register available is a bishop's transcript or the original.

I think I have found Nicholas’s Will, it is in poor condition but I’ll have a good look at it and see what info I can extract.

Willoughby-2046 and Willoughby-1226 appear to represent the same person because: Both married Henry Cavendish
