Henry was the son of Edward Willoughby and Anne Filliol.[1][2] There is conflicting evidence about his birth date. The inquisition post mortem of his uncle Sir John Willoughby says that Henry was aged 31 and upwards as of 10 January 1549 (pointing to a birth date of 1517 or very early 1518),[3] but his parents' marriage settlement was dated 10 Henry VIII or 1518/9,[4] suggesting a slightly later birth date.
Henry married Anne Grey. The marriage settlement was dated 20 September 1528.[1][2][5] They were clearly under age, as Anne's father Thomas Grey, Marquess of Dorset made provision in his will dated 2 December 1530 for Anne's remarriage should the marriage be dissolved before it was consummated:
Allso I will that if the mariage solemnised and had betwene Anne my doughter and Henry Willowghby Esquier sonne and heire apparannt of s(ir) Edwarde Wyllowghby knyght be dyssolvid by reason and [disagreement] of either of them at their laufull age of consent or by reason of dethe of the same Henry Willowghby and before carnall knowledge had betwene them that then the said Anne shal have towardes hir mariage one thousand poundes sterling as hir other susters shal have[6]
Henry inherited Woodlands, Dorset on the death of his father.[7] In early 1549, he inherited extensive estates including Wollaton, Nottinghamshire from his childless uncle Sir John Willoughby.[3][8] The inheritance included valuable coal pits.[8]
Henry was killed on 27 August 1549[3][8] at Norwich, Norfolk, England while fighting with the Earl of Warwick to put down Kett's Rebellion.[8][9] Henry was buried at Wollaton, Northamptonshire.[10] His will was dated 15 July 1549.[3]
Research Note
In both Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry Douglas Richardson gives Henry's death year as 1548.[1][2] This is incorrect. The mistake appears to go back to a 1702 account of the Willoughby family by Cassandra Willoughby.[10]
