Charles was the son of Edward Wilmot of Culham, and Elizabeth Stafford. He was educated at Magdalen College, Oxford which he entered aged 16 in 1587. Knighted in Dublin on 5 August 1599 and created Viscount Wilmot of Athlone on 4 January 1620, Charles served as Governor of Kerry and Desmond in Ireland.
In 1634 he sold the manor of Godsfield in Hampshire to the widow, Constance , and the son, Robert, of Thomas Lucy of Charlecote in Warwickshire. [1]
Wilmot m.(1) c1605, Sarah Anderson (bur. 8 Dec 1615), fourth daughter of Sir Henry Anderson, sheriff of London in 1601–2 and (2) Mary Colley (d. 3 June 1654), daughter of Sir Henry Colley of Castle Carbury and widow of Garret Moore, 1st Viscount Moore, who died in 1627.
