Martha Matilda Wilson was born in 1849 in County Galway, Ireland, to James Wilson and his first wife, Isabella (nee Hamilton) Wilson. Martha spent her childhood in India, where her father was a Sergeant in the British Army. When she was a child, Martha's mother Isabella and her baby sibling were killed by tigers. When she was aged only 15, on 13 December 1864, Martha married Sergeant Thomas Haddock who was 25. Martha and Thomas went on to have 12 children together, 7 boys and 5 girls (1 baby boy and 1 baby girl died at birth, one of them is buried at the military barracks cemetery at Aldershot, Hampshire, England).
