Biography

She was born about April 1693 in Elizabethtown, Essex County, Province of East Jersey and her parents were Remember (Baldwin) and John Winans.

Margaret Winans married about 1716 in Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey to Abraham George Hatfield, Jr.

She made her last Will on 04 July 1745 in Elizabethtown, Essex County, New Jersey which was proved on 07 Sep 1745. [1]

She was originally buried in the Old Burying Grounds in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. In the 1890s her body was reinterred in a mass crypt at Fairmount Cemetery in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, USA. [2]

Research Notes

Margaret Winans is quite the controversial ancestor; to the best of my knowledge it has not been proven that she and her husband, Abraham, Jr., ever left Essex County, NJ, her place of birth, or settled at any time in or around any Southern Colonies. Proven Hatfields of the Hatfield and McCoys infamy have not tested to show a DNA link with the Etown Settler Hatfields; furthermore, neither Abraham or Margaret list any children born out of state, or living out of state in their will, and sourced offspring show a near impossibility for their travel to and back from any southern state and childbirth while there or enroute to or from there.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

This profile needs attention. 310 Mother was dead before birth. Stated she died in 1745 in NJ, w/ a child born in 1766. Need to check error report https://wikitree.sdms.si/function/WTStatus/Status.htm?ErrID=310&UserID1=10043216&UserID2=446109

She was inaccurately attached to the wrong spouse (and child); we finally detached her and moved her to the right spouse. Joseph's mother was also fixed. Sorry it took so long to straighten this out.

Winans-1152 and Winans-23 do not represent the same person because: Margaret Winans’s mother was Remember Baldwin. Ann Robertson was John Winans’s second wife, and therefore Margaret’s step-mother. Margaret married Abraham Hatfield and was not the mother of any Hatfield’s from southern states, as some indicate or try to graft into their tree.

Margaret seems to be the daughter of Winans-49

See notes under Winans-49, he is the one who married Ann Robertson.

Margaret Hatfield Winans-1152 and Margaret Winans Winans-23 have been marked as Unmerged Matches.

Hi they were set as rejected matches but they look to be the same, also duplicate father , husband etc. but different mother so that needs to be solved first.

This Margaret Winans is not the daughter of John and Remember Baldwin Winans. Also, John did not marry Ann Robertson.

In addition to the other comments below regarding duplicate entries, I am not sure how to proceed with this common ancestor, as I also believe her mother to be Remember Baldwin, not Ann Robertson. I have visited both John and Remember Winan's gravesite in present day Elizabeth, NJ. She is buried to his left, at age 42 in the year 1722 AD, he 12 years later in 1734. Therefore, Margaret, born in 1690-94 would be the daughter of Remember, not his second wife, whom some debate was not Ann Robertson, but Frances Moore Doddridge, relict of Phillip. I found in Trenton, NJ the "Letters of Administration granted to Frances Wynans (sic) for the estate of her husband John Winans, Late of Elizabeth Town decd."

Winans-1085 and Winas-1 appear to represent the same person because: Unless George H. married Margaret Winans AND Margaret Winas.

BTW Margaret Winas would be the only Winas on Wikitree.

Margaret Winas appears to be a ghost created by confusion of Margaret Winans of NJ (NOT a spouse of George "Goff" Hatfield) with Martha (Marthy) Toms, who was born in 1720, married George "Goff" Hatfield, Jr., and was the mother of Joseph Hatfield.

Winans-1085 and Winas-1 are not ready to be merged because: Shouldnt the last name be listed as Winans or Winas instead of Hatfield?

Please correct the last name. It should be Winans.

Winans-1085 and Winas-1 appear to represent the same person because: Everything is the same as far as dates and spouse goes, just a discrepancy in spelling, but both forms have been seen in documents. Winans and Winas. Both names can be listed on the profile

Robin, can you add PPP to this profile? We need to merge Winas-1 into her and I want to make sure the merge goes in the right direction; I've asked Liz to remove the PPP from Winas-1. Thanks.
