Biography

Mary was born about 1785 in Kentucky. Her parents are unknown. She passed away about 1820 in Casey County, Kentucky.

Birth

Based on 1810 and 1920 census records, Mary was born between 1776 and 1784. Since she was married in 1806, it is likely she was born about 1784. She would have been age 22 at marriage.

Marriage

Mary married William Luttrell on 11 December 1806 in Adair County, Kentucky.[1]

Death

No death record or burial site has been found. Based on her husband's will, Mary was not his wife at the time the will was written; the will names his wife as Sally. It is generally assumed that the four children living with, or near, Sally at the time of the 1850 census are her children: Squire, John, Elizabeth and Patsy. That would put Mary's death no later than late 1820 or early 1821 in order for Sally to marry William and Squire to be born in March 1822. However, there is a four year gap between the birth of John in 1824 and Elizabeth in 1828. It is possible that Mary died after John's death about 1825 and William married Sally about 1826/27.

Children

The following are generally accepted children of William Luttrell and Mary Winfrey; all are named in William's will:

  1. Edward Luttrell, born about 1807 (or earlier). Nothing is known of Edward, although he is assumed to be the oldest child of William and Mary. However, the birth date of 1807 does not fit with the census records. If the 1810 census (see below) in Jessamine County is for William, then his oldest son was born between 1795 and 1800; the next two sons between 1800 and 1810. Is it possible that Mary was not William's first wife, but second? That might explain why William was age 40 or older when he married her.
  2. Benjamin Litteral, born about 1808. Again there is a problem with Benjamin's birth date. Later census records for Benjamin in Barren County, Kentucky, give his birth year as about 1817. A reference in an article, "Lutterals in Casey Co., KY," states Benjamin was living on his own in Barren County in 1827. If he was born in 1817, that would be impossible. The census records for William 1810 and 1820 show two sons born between 1800 and 1810 and no additional son until two sons born between 1820 and 1825. Benjamin must have been born about 1807/08; or the Benjamin in Barren County is not William's son.
  3. William Luttrell, presumed born about 1809 based on 1810 and 1820 census records. Nothing is known about William.
  4. Amanda Luttrell, born about 1810 based on 1810-1840 census records. Nothing else is known about Amanda.
  5. Samantha Luttrell, born about 1813 based on 1820 & 1830 census records. Nothing else is known about Samantha.
  6. Ann Luttrell, born about 1815 based on 1820 & 1830 census records. Nothing else is known about Ann.
  7. Sally Luttrell, born about 1817 based on 1820 & 1830 census records.
  8. Polly Luttrell, born about 1820 based on 1820 & 1830 census records. Nothing else is known about Polly.

Census

Census: 1810 Federal
