Biography

John Wingfield (1560–1626) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1597 and 1626.

John was the second son of Sir Robert Wingfield of Upton (a village some 5 miles from Tickencote) and Elizabeth, sister of William Cecil, Lord Burghley, who was Lord Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I. Sir Robert was the grandson of Sir Henry Wingfield, the Governor of Orford Castle. John was educated at Westminster School and entered Trinity College, Cambridge in 1578. He was J.P. for Kesteven, Lincolnshire from about 1583. He was feodary of Lincolnshire from 1594 to 1600 and was able to purchase lands in Rutland. In 1597, he was elected Member of Parliament for Peterborough. He was elected MP for Stamford in 1621. In 1626 he was elected MP for Grantham.

This John Wingfield was the first of a succession of twelve John Wingfields, interrupted only by Sir Richard Wingfield (1619-1663), to own Tickencote Hall and the surrounding land. He became Lord of the Manor of Tickencote by doing what more than one subsequent Tickencote Wingfield was to do; he married an heiress, in this case, Elizabeth Gresham who, after a complicated series of transactions and lawsuits, had acquired the manor, together with 2,000 acres of land.[1]

In 1602 John and Elizabeth Wingfield moved into Tickencote Hall. This was an existing manor house, of which very little is known, but it was probably the one described in an inquisition in 1433 on the death of the owner, Sir Thomas Daneys. This became the home of four generations of Wingfields until it was demolished to make way for a new Hall which was completed in 1706. Parts of the old house were at that time incorporated into an outbuilding which was used for stabling and storage until 1947 when it was converted into the residence now named Tickencote Hall.[1]

Marriages

Wingfield married firstly Elizabeth Gresham daughter of Paul Gresham. who brought him the manor of Tickencote which became his principal residence. They had at least three sons and a daughter. She died in 1602 and he married secondly Margaret Blyth, widow of John Blyth of Denton and daughter of Robert Thorold of Haugh, Lincolnshire. They had two sons and three daughters.

Death and Burial

Wingfield died at the age of about 66 and was buried at St Peter's Churchyard in Tickencote, Rutland, England.
