Obituary

The Lexington Progress, December 24, 1937

Good Citizen Died Last Sunday:

Robert Calhoun Winslow, fourth son and fifth child of the late T. H. and Melvina Winslow, was born in Henderson County, May 7th, 1878, and died December 16, 1937, aged 59 years. He spent most of his life in the community where he was born and reared some six miles west of Lexington, where he engaged in farming and the operation of a gin at what is known as Broadway. He was first married to Miss Lessie White of near Huron, who after a few months of married life, passed away, leaving one child, a girl, Mrs. Roy (Opal) Threadgill, who still survives him. Then on December 27th, 1910, he was married to Miss Minnie Russell, who with one son, Ray, four brothers and three sisters still survive; also two grandchildren, Nita and Virginia Threadgill. In early life he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Bethel and remained a member until death. Mr. Winslow was a very active and industrious man, truthful, honorable and dependable, always ready to meet his obligations to the best of his ability. He also possessed a splendid degree of personality, always courteous, kind and thoughtful of those who were associated with him, and though almost immaculate in both manner and dress, he never was vain or boastful, but insofar as it was humanly possible, he applied the Golden Rule. Elder J. O. Brown, who paid a glowing tribute to the deceased's many virtues, was assisted by Revs. E. W. Crump and J. B. Mackey. The funeral service was held at M. E. Church, South, with burial following in Lexington Cemetery.[1]
