Biography

Mercy Winslow was born abt 1676, the daughter of Kenelm Winslow and Mercy Worden of Yarmouth, Massachusetts[1] [2] [3]

Her first marriage occurred before 1699, to Malatiah White of Rochester[1][2] [4] [3] [5][6]

  • Note: these sources do not indicate she was previously married. Online family trees[7] (and a FindAGrave memorial[8]) indicate she married Freeman Ellis, however none of the records indicating that the daughter of Kenelm and Mercy (Warden) Winslow married Malatiah White or Thomas Jenkins give her as the widow of Freeman Ellis. Further, Freeman was alive after 1716, and his widow could not have married Malatiah White or Thomas Jenkins.

The children of Malatiah and Mercy (Winslow) White included:

  1. Jude, born July 16, 1699[9] [10] [5]
  2. Mercy, born July 22, 1702[9] [11], who married Nathan Ellis, son of William, and josiah Jenkins, son of Thomas[5]
  3. Margaret, born March 13, 1704[9] [11] [5], who married Edward Morse.
  4. Malatiah, born March 17, 1706[9] [10] [5]

Malatiah White died August 21, 1709 at age 38[12]. On January 10, 1712, Kenelm Winslow's will referred to her as Mercy White[1].

Before 22 December, 1715, Mercy (Winslow) White married a widower, Thomas Jenkins of Barnstable, whose first wife was Experience Hamblen[13] [1] [2] [4] [3] [5] [14] . These sources don't note any more children.

She died before 16 July 1755 in Rochester, Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Probate

Administration on the estate of "Marcy Jenkins late of sd. Rochester widdow dec'd" was granted to (her son-in-law) Edward Moorse, 16 July 1755. Also bound were Seth Dexter & John Winslow (her brother) all of Rochester.[15]

Her inventory was taken on 12 July 1755 in Rochester.[16]

Research Notes

Mercy Winslow did not marry Freeman Ellis: Mercy Winslow should not be confused with the Mercy who married Freeman Ellis (1662-bef.1728). Some online trees assume Mercy Ellis was the daughter of Kenelm Winslow because Kenelm Winslow and Mary Winslow are mentioned on some of Freeman's deeds.[17] Mercy Winslow could not have been that Mercy Ellis because Mercy Ellis was Freeman's wife when he wrote his will in 1710 and when it was proved in 1728.[18] Kenelm's 10 Jan 1712 will mentioned his daughter Mercy White and proves she and Mercy Ellis were separate people.[1]

Winslow-3334 and Winslow-232 appear to represent the same person because: Identical mother, death date and death location. Profile of Mercy Mary (Winslow) Ellis represents a common research error affecting Mercy (Worden) Winslow's daughter Mercy. Many online trees show her married to Freeman Ellis (1662-bef.1728) instead of Malatiah White (1676-1709).

Based on the sources I've added to the bio for Mercy (Winslow) Jenkins and Freeman Ellis, I propose to create a new profile for Mercy (Unknown) Ellis, and remove the Ellis family from Mercy Winslow's profile.

I'll wait a few days in case there is a need for discussion.

The death dates really need some consideration. I would lean toward the later date, since it seems unlikely that she had been dead eight years at the time of her marriage to Jenkins.

A merge has been suggested and approved by some. There are two different death dates, however, that need reconciling.
