NAME: Ezra Winslow
PARENTS: Josiah and Sarah (Hayward) Winslow
BIRTH: His birth was not recorded. He was probably born in the mid 1730s, based on his date of marriage, possibly in Easton, Bridgewater or Boston MA. In Oct 1732, Josiah and Sarah Winslow of Easton sold land in Bridgewater to Isaac Green and Joseph Walker of Boston [Plymouth Co. LR, 28:82]. In Dec 1736, Josiah and Sarah Winslow of Boston sold land in Bridgewater to John Green of Boston [Plymouth Co. LR, 31:17]
MARRIAGE: Stoughton MA, Jan 18 1759, Rachel Fenno (1740-1826?)
DEATH: Probably New Vineyard MA [now ME], about 1801. He was listed in the 1800 Federal Census as a resident of New Vineyard. In 1802, he did not appear in a New Vineyard highway tax list, although his wife Rachel and son Billings did [1], citing The Franklin Chronicle, issue dated July 23, 1896. He may have been the "Mr. Winslow" who was reported to have been robbed and killed in the "District of Maine" [The Columbian Courier, New Bedford MA, issue dated August 29, 1800].
RESIDENCES: Ezra and Rachel engaged in a number of land transactions in Bristol County MA in the 1760s. He was described as a resident of Freetown in 1759, Dartmouth from 1760 -1762, and Freetown in 1763. He apparently moved back to Dartmouth after then, as he was listed as a resident of New Bedford (part of Dartmouth prior to 1787) in the 1790 Federal Census. In 1794, he moved to the District of Maine, presumably New Vineyard in Kennebec County [now Franklin County].
MILITARY SERVICE: Holton states only that he served in both the French and Indian War, and in the American Revolution, unit and dates unknown. He is NOT the Ezra Winslow who served as a sergeant in Captain Thomas Kempton's Company of Minutemen in 1775. That Ezra Winslow was a third cousin with the same name who also resided in Dartmouth in the 1770s [2]. Circumstantial evidence exists that he may have been the Ezra Winslow who served in Captain Benjamin Reads's company of Freetown militia, Colonel John Hathaway's regiment [Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the War of the Revolution, 17:630].
OCCUPATION: Clothier.
EDUCATION: He signed his deeds.
CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: He baptized a son at the Church of Christ, First Congregational Church of Dartmouth [now Acushnet] MA.
ROYAL DESCENT: He was a descendant of William I, King of Scotland, 1165-1214, via descent from Peter Worden of Yarmouth MA. [Gary Boyd Roberts, The Royal Descents of 900 Immigrants, Baltimore 2018, 1:700, 702].
COMMENTS: He was related to a number of the founding fathers. He was a tenth cousin of George Washington {via descent from Richard and Alice (Hammerton) Sherburne), and was more distantly related to Presidents Jefferson and Madison. He was also a distant cousin of Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. His closest presidential cousin was William Howard Taft, who was a second cousin three times removed. In addition, his wife, Rachel, was a third cousin once removed to President John Adams.
