Biography

Some family researchers report Margaret's last name at birth as Winslow. No records found yet to confirm this.

Margaret was the second wife of Thomas Elliott, Sr. They may have been married about 1714. A deed transfer recorded in 1716 refers to Margaret Elliott's dower right:[1]

No. 387. Thomas Elliott of N. C. “for Love I bear my son Wm Elliott of Afore’ Have given, Part of Tract, Granted to me Aug 27, 1714, in Perq Pre'ct, on Nathan Newbys line, & the line of James Thigpen—200a “with all appurtenances.” 8d 8mo 1716. Test’ Jo. Jessop, Richard Leary. Margaret Elliott her dower right.

The reference "History or Perquimans County"[2] provides the following biography for Thomas with reference to his wife Margaret:

Thomas Elliott (son of Joseph who died 1697) emigrated to Virginia with brothers William and John. Thomas acquired a large landed estate in Carolina and served in the Assembly in1696. He was granted 555 acres in Perquimans County, Aug 27, 1714 "on ye N. W. side of Crane Ponds" adjacent Joseph Smith and Nathan Newby.
Thomas married first Sarah. He married second Margaret [ possibly Winslow], who survived him. His will Perquimans probate Dec 16, 1729. Sons: Caleb, to who he left "plantation on which I now dwell", Joshua 200 acres of land, Isaac the "remaining part of tract", William 1 shilling, Thomas, Abraham, Solomon, Moses, Joseph, Benjamin. Daughters: Mary Brown and Urseley, wife Margaret.

Following her husband's death, Margaret is mentioned in additional deed transfers:

No. 66. Isaac Elliott, of Perq, for £50 pd by Wm Elliott of afore’ sold 220a at “Chinquepin Orchard Branch” adj Land of Francis Newby, & Benj Sanders. Margaret Elliott her dower right. Jan 17, 1731/2. Test’ Zach'y Chancy, Joshua Elliott. [Issac, William, and Joshua were sons of Thomas, likely by his first wife Sarah].
No. 121. Isaac Elliott, of Perq, “in Exchange for a parcell of Land with James Morgan, I do ack’ myself Contented,” “assigned 15a before the said Morgans Door” between that, & Isaac Elliotts Land. Margaret Elliott her dower Right. Oct 15, 1733.
