Biography

Obit

WILLIAM J. WINTERS William J. Winters was born near Spencer, Owen County, Indiana, on November 13, 1844. The early part of his life was spent there and from there he joined the Union Army, enlisting in Company A. Fifty-ninth Indiana Infantry, on February 27, 1864. He was in the campaign with Sherman's Army at Chattanooga and Atlanta, and in the famous "March to the Sea." He also was with the army through South Carolina and Virginia, and on to Washington, after the close of the war. He was mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky, being given an honorable discharge July 17, 1865. He was a member of Glasco Post 239, G.A.R. Returning to his home in Indiana he was united in marriage to Cornelia (sic) Love, June 24, 1866. To this union were born five children, two boys, Alva Wilson who died at the age of six years, and Emery at the age of 8 months. The three daughters, Mrs. Etta Montgomery, Mrs. Mattie Jamison and Mrs. Bertha Shell, all live at Glasco. From Indiana the family moved to Cloud County, Kansas, first living near Concordia and for the last 34 years in Glasco, Kansas, where he practiced as a veterinary surgeon. He united with the Christian Church in early manhood and since coming to Glasco has been an active worker in the congregation here. For the last two years he has been unable to do active work and came to his departure after a stroke of paralysis. The last hours were made as easy as loving hands of his wife and three daughters could make it. The end came April 20, 1921, at the age of 76 years, 6 months and 7 days. Funeral services were held at the First Christian Church Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Gilbert Park of Formosa, a former pastor of the church. Burial was in Glasco Cemetery. [1]
