Born in 1814, John Frelan Winters was the son of James Washington Winters Sr. and Rhoda Creel (Beall) Winters. He was raised in Tennessee. For his service, John received a Donation Certificate good for 640 acres of land. He also received 320 acres for the time he served in the Texas army.
