New York Times May 3, 1894, Wednesday PILOT WINTERS DIES AT HIS POST Steamboat Montauk Crashes Into Dock -- Much Excitement on Board. GREENPORT, L.I., May 2 -- When the steamboat Montauk was crossing over from Shelter Island Heights to Greenport this evening on the way to New-York, the pilot, William Henry Winters, who was at the wheel, fell backward to the floor of the pilot house. He had been stricken with apoplexy. He died in a few minutes. Just before he fell Pilot Winters had ordered faster speed. The assistants, int eh excitement followeing the death of the pilot, lost their presence of mind and allowed the boat to go ahead, directly upon the bulkhead of the wharf. The boat struck the dock squarely head on, splitting the piles from top to bottom. Passengers were thrown from their feet and for a moment there was much excitement. The boat was but slightly damaged. Winters had been in the employ of the Montauk Steamboat Company for five years. He was about fifty-six years old and lived in Sag Harbor.
He was born 5 Nov. 1823 according to the family Bible. When he died in Greenport harbor no one really knew who he was or where he came from. This article was written before they could identify his family and residence.
