Notes

Note NI1548His birthday could be April 16, 1854 (Bill Hedgcock) or April 18, 1854 (Nevada File)
Bill Hedgcock compiled the following history from information from his mother,Grace, his uncle, Frank, and me. I have several sources; Carlas Schultz' Nevada File; information from Frank Wiseman in his letter to my brother, Gary Faupel; Justin's "Thumbnail" history; and Frank's daughter, Marian Brooks who sent me information about herself and her parents.
Louis was born in Cincinnati where his grandfather had bought some acreage in 1836. His parents moved to Kansas sometime before 1878 when Louis was around 20 years old. While living in Kansas, his parents took in a neighbor girl, Jennie Latson when she ran away from her abusive father. In 1878 Louis and Jennie eloped. Five of their children were born in Kansas. Sometime before the birth of Amy Myrtle in 1888, they moved from Kansas to Beaver, Oklahoma. Louis's parents accompanied them as did his younger brother. Stephen who had married Elizabeth Campbell, and his spinster sister, Kate who was 26 years old. Louis' other sister, Anna had married John Cresewell and they stayed in Kansas.
(In the 1880 census the family is living in Windsor Township in Cowley Co., KS. John A and wife Mary are ages 56 and 45; Louis and Jennie are 26 and 21who were married in 1878; Albert is 21, Kate is 18; Mrs. Annie Berlin age 22 is a widow with three year old Effie. Annie relationship to the head, JAW is as a border, not daughter as it should be. Another mystery is Louis has a mark in column 10 indicating that he is married, but Jennie his wife, has a mark in the column that she is single. An even larger mystery is Ella May the daughter of Louis, born 1879 is not in the census at all.)
Louis and Jennie's family increased to seven while in Oklahoma. Soon after the birth of Sadie born February 1891, the Wiseman family made yet another move further west. Those who accompanied Louis and Jennie were their 7 children, Ella May, Stephen, Elizabeth, Vera, Grover, Amy, and baby Sadie; Louis' parents, John and Mary Wiseman; Mary's brother, George Robinson; Louis' brother and his wife, Stephen Albert, called "Uncle Albert" and Elizabeth; Elizabeth's brother, William Earl Campbell; and Louis' sister, Mary "Kate". They traveled by covered wagon from Beaver, Oklahoma along the Cimarron River to New Mexico where they settled in Willow Springs which was later renamed Raton. The area was mostly Indian territories with Seminole, Navaho, and Apache tribes.
The had a crate of chickens and a milk cow. At night they would let the chickens out to run around their camp. The milk cow became sore footed and they were able to trade her for another along the way. On the trip, everyone took turns riding in the wagon, but when they came to a mountain all would have to hike up the hill. Along the way they stopped at Dodge city, Kansas to buy supplies and while they were there, witnessed an unusual event. While in the store, a man came in and when the clerk saw him, the clerk ran out the back door and jumped into a well. The man ran after him, found the clerk hiding in the well and shot him. Frank, the one who told this story, didn't know why this had happened or which one was the "good guy" or the "bad guy".
John and Mary's daughter, Kate died along the trail. She was buried en route to New Mexico. Raton became the final home for John and Mary. They are both buried in Farimont Cemetery in Raton. Stephen and Elizabeth did not have children. The land records in the Colfax court house show they owned large tracts of land in Raton. They both eventually moved to California where they died in Long Beach.
Louis kept a diary which his youngest son, Frank had in his possession. This diary is the source of the following.
(Bill Hedgcock recently learned this diary has been lost.)
Louis worked in the coal mines in Raton for a good number of years before going to work for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1903 as a carpenter to repair train cars. He earned 22 and 1/2 cents per hour, working ten hour days. His arthritis or rheumatism became so severe that he had to be hospitalized for over a year, during which time the railroad took care of all his needs. His doctors recommended a move to a warmer climate so he was transferred to Los Angeles on February 23, 1907. He and Jennie, along with 6 of their children, Grover, Amy, Sadie, Grace, Louellen, and Frank left Raton on Sunday, February 24, arriving in Los Angeles two days later on Tuesday the 26th. Louis reported to work on the 28th. He had a physical examination on March 10th. But there were no positions available and he did not find work until the first day of December when he was hired in Barstow to repair railroad cars. He moved his family there and started work on Thursday December 5th. Four years later, Louis quit working with the Santa Fe Railroad and moved back to Los Angeles where he worked in Hollywood for 12 years until his death in 1923.
From Justin Faupel's "Thumbnail" history 1984
Louis and Jennie Wiseman left Beaver, Oklahoma in 1893 for Raton, New Mexico. It was called Willow Springs then. Jennie had seven children when they left Beaver. Sadie was the baby. John and Mary's daughter, Kate died on the way. They stopped some place and had a funeral. (At this point, Justin's account stops and information is given for John Albert Wiseman Sr. and his son, John Albert Jr. See "More About" in the family pages for these two ancestors.)
(Justin repeats some of the above when he continues the story about the move to Raton.)
Ella Mae Wiseman and family including her grandparents, John and Mary Wiseman and Uncle Albert, Elizabeth, all migrated from Beaver, Oklahoma in 1893 to the Cimarron country in New Mexico by covered wagon. Mae was about twelve. Several of her brothers and sisters were included. They had a crate of chickens. When stopped for the night, they let the chickens loose. They also had a milk cow which became sore footed and were able to trade it for another on the way.
Everybody took turns walking, when they came to the first mountain, they stopped and all climbed it (the mountain). May and family made a trip to Dodge City, Kansas to buy supplies. A clerk was waiting on them and a man came and told him (the clerk) they wanted to see him. When he had finished waiting on them (the Wiseman family), he (the clerk) ran out back and jumped down an old well. They shot him in the well.
