"Hannah Clorinda Wiseman was a daughter of John Wiseman and Hannah Culver. She moved to Ohio (from Carlisle Pennsylvania) with her parents and siblings around 1834. She married Matthias Waggoner Caris on 29 Mar 1842 in Bucyrus, Crawford County. Ohio From Bucyrus they (Hannah and Matthias) moved to this then unbroken wilderness near cardington in the year 1844, where the still reside. She had united with the Desciple Church in Pennsylvania and found a home in the Pompey Christian Church with its first members. Having been reared in refined society, the trials and hardships of ppioneer life were hard to endure, ,but years passed and today were big beech woods and where wild beast had then met the eye, now may be seen beautiful farm lands . . . Mrs. Caris possessed a fine intellectual knowledge, was a teacher in her earlier years. Her education was a great help to her in bringing up her children. Her home was alwlays open to friends and the active years of her life were spent for the good of those around her. . . ."

Washington Gardner is the only survivor of this family. He was born November 2, 1814, at Zanesville, Ohio, and was a child when he came with his parents to Peru township, where he was reared and educated, remaining with his parents until their death. He was married September 5, 1847, to Miss Mary Wiseman, a native of Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, and a daughter of John and Hannah (Culver) Wiseman, both natives of Pennsylvania, the father being a farmer. The Wiseman family moved to Ohio in 1829 and settled on a farm in Columbiana county. In 1835 they located at Bucyrus, and some years later moved to Lincoln township, this county, where the father and mother both passed away. They were the parents of thirteen children, of whom five are living, viz.: Mrs. M. W. Caris, Mrs. Gardner, John, Isaiah, and Mrs. Sarah Martin. Mrs. Gardner was educated at Bucyrus and at Kenton Seminary, and was for some years engaged in teaching, beginning in Morrow county when she was sixteen. She received $1.50 per week and “boarded around.”

Historical Information about Parents of Hannah Corinda Wiseman After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gardner settled at Westfield, Morrow county, and in 1865 removed from there to their present farm in Lincoln township. He was for seventeen years engaged in the milling business, and for some years also worked at the carpenter’s trade. In politics Mr. Gardner is a Republican, and has all his life taken an active interest in public affairs. He has been a delegate to both county and State conventions, has served as Trustee of Westfield, Peru and Lincoln townships, and now, at the age of eighty years, is serving as School Director. When the civil war came on he was among the first to tender his services for the protection of his country. He enlisted July 25, 1861, in Company G, Twenty-sixth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as teamster, and was in the service for eleven months, participating in the battle of Booneville, West Virginia. He is a member of the G. A. R. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gardner are members of the United Brethren Church.
