Wiswall was born in Boston, graduated from Harvard College in 1749, became a Congregational minister and settled in Brunswick, ME. He married Mercy Minot of Brunswick, with whom he had four children. He converted to Anglicanism and went to Falmouth to a new Congregation when the Revolutionary War began. Mercy died in Falmouth and John was arrested for his loyalty to the crown in 1775. He fled to Boston where he served as a Navy chaplain for a few years. In 1781 he returned to England and in 1783 emigrated to Cornwallis, Nova Scotia where he continued his Anglican ministry.In 1784, he married Margaret Hutchinson of New Jersey. They had no children. He built a church that is still standing in Wilmot, Nova Scotia. His son Peleg became a Nova Scotian Supreme Court Judge. John Wiswall kept extensive journals....
