Dennett Abner Witt was born on 3 August 1829 to John W. Witt and Dicie (aka Dicey) A. Witt. (per the Virginia death registry) in Nelson County, Virginia. His parents were first cousins.[1]
Marriage
Dennett married Elizabeth Jane McComb 29 September 1853, in Augusta County, Virginia. This date is supported by a copy of dates taken from the family Bible of the granddaughter (name unknown) of James McComb (1765-1846) (copy in personal files of H. Witt-1888). The record also stated at the time of their marriage, Dennett Witt was 24 (born c. 1829) and Elizabeth was 19 (born c. 1834). This information is also supported by that fact that Elizabeth was from Augusta County and their first son was born in July 1854.
Sheriff
Dennett served first as a deputy to the sheriff of the county, and then as the county sheriff, as recorded in cases brought before the Chancery Court. He was serving as sheriff in 1860 and in his capacity as sheriff handled the estate of George Morris, Sr., who died intestate.
Death
Dennett Witt died 12 Jan 1882 in Massie's Mill, Nelson County, Virginia, of paralyxis at the age of 52 years. His parents were named in the Virginia death registry as Jno. W. and Dicey A. Witt.[2]
