Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Sarah (Witt) Cannady was a Virginia colonist.

Sarah was born about 1720. She is the daughter of William Witt; her mother's name is unknown. She was probably born in Henrico County based on her father's Henrico County court record dated July 1720.

Sarah is named as Sarah Canidey, wife of John Cannady, in the will of her father, William Witt, dated 25 April 1754 and proven 13 June 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia.[1] [2] [3] [4]

She is said to have married John Cannady about 1748 [5] and to have had at least one daughter, Nancy Kennedy, who married James Chasteen/Chastain. Most ancestry.com family trees give Sarah's death date and Nancy's birth date as the same, 25 April 1754, implying she died in childbirth with Nancy. This date is the date her father's will was written and all that can be concluded is she was married and living on that date and it cannot be used as a death date. In addition, she supposedly had six additional children after Nancy.

Marriage date to John Cannady and birth dates of their children are also questioned because there is an apparent gap of about sixteen years between the supposed marriage, 1738, and reputed birth of her first child in 1754. One wonders if this John Cannady is the correct husband.

There seems to be no source for the oft stated location of Sarah's death as Bedford County, Virginia.

Research Notes

Elizabeth Mildred (Daux) Witt has been determined to be a non-existent person. See her profile for details on research and evidence for disproving her existence. She is being removed as wife of William Witt and as mother of his children.

We do know William had a wife, he had children. No evidence has been located which includes her name or any information about her; no surname, no birth or death dates or locations. Some mentions have turned up that her given name may have been "Mary," but again no evidence is provided.

Witt-3334 and Witt-781 appear to represent the same person because: they share a similar birth year and the same spouse, John Canady/Cannady.
