Biography

William Witt was born on 5 Sept 1783 in Amherst County, Virginia, per his father's military service declaration. He was the son of Elisha Witt and Phoebe Dodd. William passed away on 30 January 1844 in Estill County, Kentucky[1]

Marriage and Children

William married Lucy Witt on 20 May 1806 in Madison County, Kentucky; William Witt was bondsman[2]. William and Lucy were first cousins. William's father, Elisha, and Lucy's father, William, were brothers.

The following 11 children have been attributed to William and Lucy[1]. An additional 2 have also been identified by other sources.

  1. Martha Witt (1827-1891) (m. Durham)
  2. George (m. Webb)
  3. Allen Witt (1813-1883) (m. Mary B. Cox)
  4. Louisa J. (m. King)
  5. Emaline (in 1850 census with mother; source says m. Richard Barnes, but marriage records show her sister Rosanna married him and Emaline married Irvine Howard in 1852).
  6. James Witt (bef.1818-1897) (m. Dunaway)
  7. May (Mary A. in 1850 census with mother) (m. Barnett)

  10. Delaney Witt (abt.1821-abt.1903) (in 1850 census with mother; m. Johnson)
  11. Malrinda (aka Malinda) (source says she did not marry)

The 1850 census for Lucy[3] also listed:

  1. Francis M. (m. Armilda Witt)

FamilySearch.org and Ancestry trees also include and there is some DNA evidence to support the relationship (see Research Notes):

  1. Rosanna (m. Richard Barnes)

One additional child is listed in the HalcyonDays database (mostly unsourced)[4]

  1. John Burns Witt (c1816-1864, without sources[5]).

Witt-1888 01:06, 5 March 2021 (UTC): In Ancestry.com, I match 13 DNA descendants of William and Lucy (through 6 different children: Allen, James, Delaney, Martha, Rosanna, and Francis; cM 9 to 24 in length; one 33 cM over 2 segments). The strength of the matches support the amplification of DNA that occurs with cousin marriages. William is my 1st cousin, 5x removed (common ancestor is John and Lucy Witt). [H. Malinda Whitt (married Sam Jarrell) as daughter of William and Lucy Witt is not supported by other sources. First, by 1806 Wm. and Lucy had migrated to and were married in Kentucky per their marriage record (and Malinda was born in N. Carolina and married in Wayne Co., Virginia/W.Virginia). Malinda's surname spelling is different from William (the Witt/Whitt split had happened decades before the 1800s).

Witt-989 and Witt-985 appear to represent the same person because: Same birthday (5 Sep), same death date and location. All children on profiles belong. Spouse was Lucy Witt.
