It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.

I see the same information in North American Family Histories 1500-2000 (the copy I see on Ancestry.com is from "The Family of Henry Wolcott" by Chandler Wolcott, published 1912 by Genessee Press of Rochester, N.Y., page 11). it states the source as:
Hollister's History of Connecticut, Vol. 1, page 189. An on-line search comes up with: "The History of Connecticut, from the First Settlement of the Colony to the Adoption of the Present Constitution" by Gideon Hiram Hollister.
The Chandler Wolcott genealogy has been replaced with three updated genealogies published by the Wolcott Family Society, the latest being released in 2002. There were errors in the Chandler edition that have been corrected in each subsequent edition.
