Biography

Hans Bernhardt Wolff was baptized on 2 March 1674 in Steinsfurt, Sinsheim, Kurfürstentum Pfalz, Heiliges Römisches Reich. He was the son of Isaac Wolff (1650-1727) and Elisabetha (Ludwig) Wolff (1653-1730). Here is a scan of his baptism record.
Baptism Record
[1][2][3]
He was not the first in his family born in the vicinity of Steinsfurt. His mother, Elisabetha, had been baptized there on July 3, 1653.[4]
Annett Kunselman Burgert describes the village of Steinsfurt dating back to at least 1100.
Steinsfurt-named for a Roman ford in at the Elsenz- is first mentioned in a document dated 1100. A town belonging to the Electoral Palatine, it had a Reformed Church. On the Hof of the Lerch family in Steinsfurt-hence the name Lerchennest (lark nest)-Frederick the Great stayed overnight on August 4/5, 1730, as he fled enemies. Of the many families which emigrated to Pennsylvania, there are still branches of Warfel, Wust, Wolff, Bender, Leibe, Laber, Schorck and Wanner in Steinsfurt today.[3]
His original last name at birth, Wolff, later morphed into Wolf or Wolfe. The name change happened after he came to Pennsylvania. The Wolffs were (via tradition) wolf hunters in Germany.[5]

Wife and Children

Bernhardt Wolff and his wife Susanna had children while living in Steinsfurt, Baden.
  • Hans Georg Wolff born to Hans Bernhardt Wolff and his wife, Susanna and baptized 28 Dec 1695 in Steinsfurt, Sinsheim, Sinsheim, Baden, Deutschland.[3][6]
  • Georg Michael who was born in 1699, died in 1702 and was buried 30 Mar 1702 at Steinsfurt.[3][7]
  • Johannes Bernard Wolff was baptized 11 Oct 1701 at Steinsfurt.[3][8]
  • Another Georg Michael who was probably named for his brother who died in 1702 was baptized 29 Dec 1703 at Steinsfurt.[3][9]
  • Anna Maria Wolff was baptized May 1706 at Steinsfurt.[3][10]
  • Jeremias Wolff was baptized 29 Apr 1708.[3][11]
  • Hans Jacob was baptized 4 Apr 1711 and died 31 Jan 1721.[3][12]
  • Susanna Wolff was born 6 Mar 1714 and baptized 9 Mar 1924 at Steinsfurt.[3][13]
  • Anna Elisabetha baptized in 1716 at Steinsfurt.[3][14]

Immigration

Bernhardt and wife and children arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, British Colony aboard the ship ,William and Sarah, in September of 1727. They sailed from Rotterdam with Captain William Hill as the master. Bernhardt and his son, Hans Jerg (George) both signed a oath of allegiance to King George II and the British Empire on September 21, 1727. Bernhart signed Hanß Bernhardt Wolff using the two ff on the end of his last name.[15][16][17][18]

His Church Affiliation

Hans Bernhardt Wolf was baptized for a second time by Elder Michael Frantz of the German Baptist Brethren, Conestoga Congregation in 1739. In this record of his baptism his name is spelled Bernhart Wolf. German script is used especially for the capital B. Here is a copy of the record.

Death

Commemorative Biographical Record of Central Pennsylvania by J. H. Beers & Co. has Bernhardt death around 1748. This source also says his wife and son, Hans George Wolff were to be executors of his will.[21]
Another source, a reprint of a short history of the Wolfe family, focusing on George Wendell Wolfe, from the Mifflinburg Telegraph, also said he died in 1748 in Pennsylvania.[22]

Will of Bernhard Wolfe's son- Johannes Bernard Wolff

This seems to be the will of Bernhardt's 3rd son, Johannes Bernard Wolff who died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on 2 Nov 1756 and had his will probated on 6 Nov 1756.. He names three brothers, John George, Jeremias and John Michael and does not call them sons as would be customary if he were their father. He names Lorrantz Rooff as a brother-in-law. Jacob Shirske and George Kinder are possible brother-in-laws too.[23]

Research Notes

It has been suggested that this man may never have emigrated from Germany and that the Hans Bernhardt who arrived in 1727 was in fact his son, Johannes Bernard Wolfe (1701-1756).
However, Burgert assets that it was this man, Bernhardt Sr. who was the primary immigrant.[25] It does seem unlikely that the younger man would arrive with a large family at this early date.

Pages1-110 of Pennsylvania German Pioneers published by the Pennsylvania-German Society were surveyed to get these names. Notice another Hans Bernhart Wolff arrived in Pennsylvania on the Samuel in 1733. This Bernhart was about 29 years.
