Johann Nicholas Wolff was born in 1720 and baptized on 28 July 1720, in Niederhochstadt, Kurfürstentum Pfalz, Heiliges Römisches Reich. His parents were Conrad Wolff and Anna Margaretha. Johann Nicholas married Maria Elisabetha Bresslerin on 1746 in Niederhöchstadt.[1][2]
They had at least 2 children in Niederhochstadt.
  • Johannes Wolff, baptized 29 Oct 1746,[3]
  • Valentin, born 22 Apr 1750 and baptized 24 Apr 1750[4]

Immigration

In 1751, he together with Elisabeth and their 2 children left. They sailed on the Janet captained by William Cunningham. They were on the Janet from Rotterdam and last at Cowes. On 7 October 1751 Johann Nicholas Wolff sighed the oath of abjuration- Jo. Nickolas Wolff on board- at the courthouse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, British Colony. [5][6]
After their arrival two more children were born to this couple.
  • Carl Wolf, born 20 Oct 1751
  • Maria Margaretha, Born 22 Sep 1753[7]

Berks County, Pennsylvania

Nicholas occupation in Berks County was farming and blacksmithing. At the time of his death he owned 2 cows, 4 steers, 1 heifer, 3 sheep and 2 hogs along with farm equipment including a sled plough. His probate record lists him as a blacksmith. This record, dated 8 Nov 1784, names his wife Elisabeth Wolf as his widow.[8][9]

Research Notes

There were several men named Nicholas Wolff (or similar) in Pennsylvania before 1760, who appear to be confused. Also Wolf-996 and Bichler-114 are very unlikely candidates for Nicholas's parents since Michael married in Pennsylvania and lived in Steinsfurt before he immigrated in 1727.

Nicholas Wolff #1 or Wolfe-486

The husband of Maria Elisabetha Bressler has a profile in Annnette Burgerts’ Palatine Origins of Some Pennsylvania Pioneers. He was baptized in Niederhochstadt on July 28, 1720, was the son of Conrad Wolff and wife Anna Margaretha, married Maria Elisabetha Bressler in Niederhochstadt on January 25, 1746 and had two children with her there: Johannes b. 29 Oct 1746; and Valentin b. 22 Apr. 1750. They came to Pennsylvania on the Janet in 1751. They had two more children in Bethel, Berks, Pennsylvania (Stoever records): Carolus, b. October 20, 1751; Maria Margaretha, b. September 22, 1753. They lived in Bethel, Berks. He died about 1784 – on November 8, 1784 administration was granted to Elisabeth Wolf, widow of Nicholas Wolf of Bethel. [10]

Nicholas Wolff #2 or Wolfe-4559

One Johan Nickel Wolff arrived in Philadelphia on the Glasgow in 1738.[11]
This Wolff married Anna Maria Bower (Bower-276) They lived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. This Nicholas Wolff died on or about January 10, 1771 in Hempfield, Lancaster County, PA (Lancaster County probate records).[12]

Nicholas Wolff #3 or Woolf-184

This Nicholas Wolff married Anna Maria Bressler (Bressler-12) who was probably a cousin of Maria Elisabetha Bressler (Bressler-368)
This family had ties to Virginia. Some of the children listed for Wolfe-486 probably belong to Wolfe-4559 or Woolf-184. All these men's LNAb was spelled Wolff in the German records and/the ship's records.

None of the children listed for Wolfe-486 and Bressler-368 belong to them. I have explained this in my research notes. I need guidance as to what to do about this.

Nicholas #2 could likely be a relative of the Nicholas who fathered some of these children. Conrad Wolff, age 19, was also on the Glasgow in September of 1738 and his son, Johann Nicholas Wolff would have been about 8 at this time. This younger Nicholas married Anna Maria Bower in about 1751and may have had these children Daniel, Mary Elizabeth, George Theobald, Anna Maria, Henry, John Nicholas, Magdalena and Jacob.

It looks as though the children attached to this profile may belong to a different Nicholas Wolfe, possibly one of the men discussed in the research notes, possibly Nicholas (Woolf) Wolfe (1725-1802) -- I like that he died in Harrison County, Virginia, but there are no Sources for him.

The Nicholas of this profile appears to have settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania all his life, but his children are: Charles, b. 1746 in Berkeley County (W) Virginia; Nicholas, b. 1748 in Frederick County, Maryland; George, b. 1750 in Lancaster (YAY!); John Jacob, b. 1751 in Bayern, Germany; John Jacob, b. 1751 in Berkeley; Charles, b. 1755 in Berkeley; Barbara, b. 1760 in unknown but died in Tennessee; George, b. 1755 in Virginia; Mary, b. 1760 in unknown but died in Tennessee. Yes, there are two sons named Charles and two named George. Charles (both of them!) especially stands out as a very British name for the son of a Palatinate emigrant.

Should some children be detached from this couple?

*Another Georg Michael Wolff could have been the father of Johann Nicholas Wolff (See family search, (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G8K8-L2R)
These next two records suggest this another Georg Michael come in 1739 aboard the Friendship, signed the oath 3 Sep 1739 and were with these family members, wife Juliana Maria Engelhart; Conrad, 20; Johan, 20 and Bernard Wolff.

(see p265, on A list, Jurig Mich. Wolf, Conrade Wolf and Johan Nickell; p 268, on B list Geo. Mich. Woolf, John Conrad Woolf and Johannes Nichol.

This profile (Wolfe-486) is a real mess. Four spouses (most if not all the same person with merges needed), multiple children of the same name (dupes, merges needed), and unsubstantiated bio data. I don't have the ability to fix the obvious problems. Are there people in the network that can fix profiles like these, or do they just continue to spiral out of control like some Ancestry profile?
