John was born about 1596, the son of Sir John Wolstenholme and Catherine Fanshaw. He married Anne Dallison of Laughton, Lincolnshire, and they had nine sons and three daughters. John served as a Member of Parliament representing West Looe in 1625 and 1626 and Queenborough in 1640. He was knighted in 1633 and created a baronet by Charles II in 1664.
