Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Thomas Womack was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas, son of Abraham Womack and Sarah Worsham, was born about 1686 in Henrico County, Virginia Colony.

He married Mary Farley about 1706 in Henrico County.

"Thomas Womack of Henrico Co. to Richard Grills, of same County. 10 shill: sterl. 36 acres on N. side Swift Creek, taken out of a patent granted Capt. [John] Worsham dated 20 Octr. 1691. Augt. 1, 1712. Mary wife of sd. Thomas Womack relinquished her dower right."[1]

"Thomas Womack is appointed surveyor from the Wolfpit to the head of Cold Water Run. Oct. 1721." He was appointed Grand Juryman on 2 November 1724.[1]

Disputed Spouse

There is no record at all for the marriage of Thomas Womack to anyone other than Mary Farley. Sarah Owen is being removed as wife of Thomas Womack.

Birth Year

First record mentioning Thomas Womack was in Feb 1701 - [WD 1697-1704:249 (image 129)] Feb 1701 (very likely 1702 NS) - Thomas Womack (his signature) and Robert Green (mark RG) witnessed bond of Joseph Bullington to Henry Jordan for land sold to him Feb 1701 (see p.240). See Old Style Dates. This record was very likely actually in Feb 1702 as we reckon dates now.

A person of either gender could witness a document at age 14. Thus, by Feb 1702, Thomas Womack was at least 14, putting his birth year at 1688 or earlier. Given that he likely married Mary Farley circa 1706, and had eldest child Abraham circa 1708, Thomas was likely born circa 1686. Proof Abraham was oldest (ref William son of Thomas). [Thank you to Robert Burke for this information.]

Death & Legacy

Thomas passed away before January 1733/34 in Henrico County. His will was dated 20 March 1732/33 and proved in court January 1733/34.[2] In it he names his wife Mary and children:

  1. Abraham Womack
  2. William Womack
  3. Isham Womack
  4. Thomas Womack
  5. Francis Womack
  6. Judith Womack
  7. Sarah Womack
  8. Elizabeth Womack
  9. Mary Womack
  10. Martha Womack

The inventory of his estate was "brought to appraisement" on 20 February 1733/4 and presented in Henrico Court on "1 Monday in April 1734" by Mary Womeck Exetrx and was ordered to be recorded.[1]

On 5 August 1745 Mary Womack "is summoned to next Court to relieve William Robertson from his suretyship for her faithful performance of the administration on the estate of Thomas Womack decd."[1]

Thomas was born in 1672. He passed away in 1733.

There are no records that name Abraham Womack Sr's wife or wives. There is also no proof that Jane, wife of Henry Pew, was a Womack, much less the daughter of Abraham Sr.

The 1666 value for Abraham Jr is absurd, and based on the incorrect theory that the Abraham Womack who died in Henrico, will dated 1732 was in fact Abraham Jr, born circa 1666. Abraham Womack Sr was born circa 1645, age from multiple depositions, and he died between Nov 1732 and Oct 1733, approx 88 years old.

From the earliest known records of each of his children, William was born c1675, Abraham Jr c1680, Thomas c1686, and Martha c1688.

All of these dates are approximate.

The dates seem odd. The current list of siblings matched to parent's age at birth is:

Jane - 1662 - 18 Abraham - 1666 - 22 Martha - 1680 - 36 William - 1682 - 38 Thomas - 1686 - 42

The latter three are essentially unsourced with regards to birth dates. Thomas's birth date appears to be based on speculation -- it seems like the (unsourced) comment "Thomas was born in 1672" is probably closer to the truth -- the gap of 14 years between children doesn't really make sense.

Womack-2260 and Womack-190 appear to represent the same person because: I received approval for his wife Mary Farley (Farley-252) but not for him.

Where are your sources for the birth/death dates?
Womack-190 and Womack-2260 do not represent the same person because: Womack-190 b 1690, Womack-2260 b 1672

Womack-2260 and Womack-190 appear to represent the same person because: nearly same birth/death dates & places; both married to Mary Farley and have son Isham Womack.
Womack-199 adds to the confusion, which began with the marriage of William Charles Augustus Womack and Mary Judd. This writer (a Womack) will attempt to reconcile the many differences but will need the help of my many friends. Please do not hesitate to offer corrections or advice. WCAW is my starting point.
Womack-1080 and Womack-190 appear to represent the same person because: death date is similar; both married to Mary Farley; birth date difference needs to be reconciled.
Womack-1236 and Womack-1080 appear to represent the same person because: dates and places are the same or similar
