Alfred was born in Manchester, England in the year 1876 or 78. He sailed to America with his family at the age of 7 in 1883 0r 84. The family settled in the Philadelphia area, and Alfred grew up and went to school there. He attended a Theological college to become an Episcopalian minister. However, he left college and ran away to sea after joining the merchant marines. In due course, his ship came to port in New York where he went on to become a star of the New York stage under the name, Alfred I. Spooner.
