GOLDEN WEDDINGS PRESS, VOLUME LXXIII, ISSUE 22234, 27 OCTOBER 1937 MR AND MRS CHARLES WOOD Yesterday was the fiftieth anniversary of the wedding of Mr and Mrs Charles Wood, 95 Leinster road, St. Albans. Mr Wood, who was born in 1863 at the “Mill House,” Fendalton, which house his father built, was the third son of Mr W. D. Wood, founder of the firm of Wood Bros., flourmillers, and who came to New Zealand in the Randolph, one of the First Four Ships, with the windmill which gave the old Windmill_ road Its name. Mr Wood received his education at Warwick House School, and at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, where he was the second student to enrol. He says that he and Mr Reginald Hart, of Wellington, are the only survivors of the original 11 students of the college. On leaving Lincoln, Mr Woodmanaged his fathers estate, “Swyncombe,” at Kaikoura. There were 3500 sheep when he started, and after seven years, he was shearing 18,000 with 62 men under him as well as contractors. In 1887, the year of his marriage, he took over “Lynton Downs,” which he sold m 1907, when he went to England, On his return, in 1911, he bought “Cheddar Valley” in the Amuri District, which he still holds. He has been chairman of the Kaikoura County Council, chairman of directors of the Kaikoura Dairy Factory, a captain of the Kaikoura Mounted Rifles, and a Justice of the Peace. He married Miss Frances Flower, the eldest daughter of Mr J. N. Flower, the founder of the Auckland Grammar School and King’s College, Parramatta, New South Wales. It was when her father was managing the Kaikoura branch of the Bank of New Zealand that she was married to Mr Wood. There are three daughters, Mrs G. Lees (Melbourne), Mrs Sinclair Murchison, and Mrs R. L. Ronaldson, both of Christchurch, and two sons, Messrs D. T. Wood, a farmer in North Auckland, and L. B. T. Wood, an electrical engineer of Christchurch.
