Biography

Just days before John's will was written, John Wood, alias Atwood, granted the town of Middleborough land for a highway to be laid out on the Namassakett River for the inhabitants of the town as requested by George Vaughn. [1]

On June 5, 1673, the will of John Wood, alias Atwood was presented to the Plymouth Colony Court on the oaths of George Vaughn and Jonathan Wood, alias Atwood. They stated that on April 13, 1673, John Wood, alias Atwood, son of Henry deceased declared the following: [1]

  • that his house that he dwelt in, with adjacent land and meadow should be equally divided between his two youngest brothers, Abiel and James, and his youngest sister Mary.
  • that James and Abiel should 'have it forever' provided they paid sister Mary her one third
  • the rent of the house is to be paid to his mother during her natural life
  • his other lands and moveables should be sold to pay any debts
  • administrators to be George Vaughn, John Nelson, and Jonathan Wood, alias Atwood [1]

His inventory was taken on May 29, 1673, by Jonathan and listed (not valued) a house with 100 acres, and additional two lots of 25 acres and 27 acres. [1][2]

On 29 October 1673 at Plymouth, the court ordered that the eldest son of John Wood, alias Atwood, Samuel Wood shall have and enjoy the estate if he gave consideration to the court to pay for forty acres of land to his two younger brothers, Abiel, and James.[3]
