Biography

Rachel Wood was born in 1825 in Ohio, the daughter of Israel Wood and Mary H. Thurston.

In 1850, the Wood family lived in Gilead, Morrow, Ohio. The household included Israel Wood, 53, born in Vermont, a farmer, with $2500 in real estate; his wife Mary H., 50, b. NY; their eight children, all b. Ohio: Daniel, 26, a farmer; Rachel, 24; Francis, 22; Lydia, 19; Jonathan, 16, a farmer; Rhoda, 14; Eunice, 12; and Beulah, 5. The five youngest children were in school. [1]

In 1860, the Coutant family lived in Greenwich Township, Huron County, Ohio. The household included Zephaniah Coutant, 34, born in New York, a blacksmith, with $3000 in real estate and $300 in personal estate; his wife Rachel, b. Ohio; their children, all b. Ohio: Evaline (ELWIN), 8, in school; George, 6, in school; and Benson (BENONI), 5. Also living with them was Michael Fardine, 40, b. Ireland, a blacksmith.[2]

In 1870, the Coutant family lived in Gilead Township, Ohio. The household included Z. B. Coutant, 44, born in New York, a farmer, with $8850 in real estate and $1000 in personal estate; his wife, Rachel H., 44, born in Ohio; their children, all born in Ohio, and all in school: Elwin S., 17; George W., 15; Benona S., 13; and Chester C., 7. Also living with them was Agnes Weston, 2, born in Ohio.[3]

In 1880, the Coutant family lived on their farm in New Hampton, Iowa. The household included Z. B. Coutant, 54, a farmer, born in New York, as were his parents; his wife, Rachel H., 54, b. Ohio (parents b. NY); their sons, all born in Ohio: G. W., 26, a surveyor; B. L., 25, railroad worker; and Chester C., 17, apprentice to a tinner. Also, Agnes Weston, 12, a student, born in Ohio (unknown where parents were born).[4]

Rachel H. Coutant (8 December 1825 - 14 January 1898) is buried at Old Quaker Cemetery, Blount, Tennessee. [5]
