Educated Cheshire Academy (Ohio) and Hillsdale College (Michigan). Married in Albany, Ohio to Florence Ellen Vorhies, 14 Nov 1876. 2-term major of Athens, Ohio. Prosecuting attorney, Athens County, 1891 - 1897. Member & Chairman of the Spanish Treaty Claims Commision (Spanish-American war reparations). Trustee of Ohio University.

In 1864 , his mother , a widow, moved to Cheshire, O. and James went with his uncle Joseph Mauk. He md in 1876 Florence Ellen Vorhes, dau. of John & Ellen of this county. Had son John Vorhes Wood. His brother, Joseph Mauk Wood, b July 28, 1850 at Rio Gande. He md in 1871, Emily Bingham Pullins, dau. of Samuel & Margaret Pullins, and had 4 ch.
